Why it works for beginners

A method you can grow into

Ashtanga can look athletic from the outside. In practice it is a patient, repeatable method, and that is exactly what helps a beginner.

Your own pace

In a Mysore style class you practise the sequence at your own pace, and everyone is on their own sequence. You add new postures only when you are ready.

The same sequence

Krama means sequence: each asana prepares the body for the next. Repeating one order of postures makes progress easy to notice from week to week.

Breath first

Vinyasa means movement with the breath. Breathing is steady and even, through the nose, with the inhale as long as the exhale. If you can breathe, you can begin.

“Despite being virtual, she provided detailed feedback on my poses and suggested corrections that made a real difference.”

Before you begin

How to prepare for your first class

  • Set up your space. A mat, a quiet corner and room to move.
  • Come with an empty stomach. If practising in the afternoon or evening, have no food for 3 to 4 hours before.
  • Breathe through the nose. Keep the mouth closed and use deep Ujjayi breathing.
  • Do not over-stretch. Respect your body. There is a thin line between flexibility and injury, so take it easy and go slow.
  • Finish in Shavasana. Lie down for 10 to 15 minutes after the practice.

Common questions

Beginner questions, answered

I'm not flexible. Can I still do Ashtanga as a beginner?

Yes! Don't worry if you can't touch your toes. As long as you are breathing, you can practise yoga. The beauty of a Mysore-style class is that you will progress at a pace that suits you and your body, and over time you will become stronger and more flexible.

What is the right age to learn yoga?

Anyone above the age of 8 can practise yoga.

What should I wear to my first class?

You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Clothes that allow you to move comfortably and keep cool work well: shorts or leggings and a t-shirt or vest.

How does the $10 first class work?

Your first class is $10. Pick an open time on the booking page, and Sneh sends your Zoom link and payment details before class. After that, classes are $20 each, or $99 a month for unlimited classes. Each class is one hour, live on Zoom.

What time zone are the open slots shown in?

The booking page shows every open slot in your own time zone, with the zone name, so you can pick a time that works where you live.
