The fourth limb

What is pranayama?

Pranayama is one of the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga. The word is usually translated as expanding the life force: working with the breath, the pranic force. It sits right after asana, the postures, in the traditional order of the limbs.

“If the Mind is the King of the senses, the master of Mind is the Breath.”

For a beginner, pranayama simply means learning to slow the breath down, make it even and pay attention to it. The breath becomes one steady thing for the mind to follow.

What you will learn

Three foundations, taught live on Zoom.

Breath awareness

The principles of conscious breathing. Before you change the breath, you learn to notice it: where it moves, how long it lasts and when it catches.

Full yogic breathing

Deep, complete breaths through the belly, ribs and chest. The inhale fills from the belly upward and the exhale empties gently in the same order.

Nadi Shodhana

Alternate nostril breathing to calm the mind. One nostril is gently closed while you breathe through the other, then you switch, keeping each breath slow and even.

Breath and movement

Ashtanga is Vinyasa Krama yoga: the body moves on the inhale, stays, then moves on the exhale. During the practice you breathe through the nose with the mouth closed, using deep Ujjayi breathing, and the inhale is as long as the exhale. Time spent on pranayama makes that steady breath easier to find on the mat.

Good habits for beginners

  • Sit comfortably. Cross-legged on the floor or on a cushion, with a tall, relaxed spine.
  • Practise on an empty stomach. If practising in the afternoon or evening, have no food for 3 to 4 hours before.
  • Never force the breath. Keep every breath comfortable. If you feel light-headed, return to normal breathing and rest.
  • Little and often. A few calm minutes most days teaches more than one long, strained session.
